Rev. James Caviness, Jr.

July 2, 1941 — April 5, 2017

Rev. James Williams Caviness, Jr., 75, on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, N.C. slipped peacefully away to his Jesus, to all of his treasures stored up in Heaven and to hear our God say, ''Well done, thy good and faithful servant.''

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 4 p.m. at Smyrna United Methodist Church in Robbins, N.C. officiated by the Rev. David Woodhouse and the Rev. David Beck.

James was born in Siler City, N.C. on July 2, 1941 to James Williams Caviness, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Flippin Caviness. He was the husband of Jackie Sue Beck Caviness. James was a graduate of Bennett High School in Bennett, N.C., John Wesley Bible College in Greensboro, N.C., Elon College in Elon, N.C. and Duke Divinity School Course of Study in Durham, N.C. He was a Retired Associate Member of the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. Over his 50 years of pastoring, James served churches in three different denominations in N.C. In the Christian denomination, he served Brown's Chapel Church and Providence Chapel Church in Robbins, Flint Hill Church in Biscoe, and New Center Church in Seagrove. In the Wesleyan denomination, James served Bryson City Wesleyan Church in Bryson City. In the United Methodist denomination, James served the Troy Circuit  in Troy including First UMC, Uwharrie UMC, Ophir UMC, and Wadeville UMC; Center UMC in Sanford; the Ellerbe Charge in Ellerbe including Ellerbe First UMC and Mt. Pleasant UMC; Union UMC in Lillington; and St. Paul's UMC in Maxton. His greatest desire was for people to know and feel God's love and accept God's salvation that was so freely given to us all.

James (know to many as Jimmie) was a loving and devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle and cousin. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jackie Sue Beck Caviness of the home; his daughters, Joan Caviness (Scot Huber) of Raleigh, N.C., Janna Caviness Shelton of Siler City, N.C.; his son, James William Caviness, III (Sally) of Greenville, N.C.; his sisters, Linda Rudd, Mary Beth Hampton (Gerald), Sarah Caviness; his brothers, Edward Caviness (Martha), Raymond Caviness (Jane); his grandchildren, Crystol Shelton Gerding (Alan) of Fairlawn, Ohio, Anna Elizabeth Shelton, Wesley Robert Shelton, Luke Edward Shelton of Siler City, N.C. James William Caviness, IV, Sarah Grace Caviness, Kaylee Nicole Caviness of Greenville, N.C. and many nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law the Rev. Robert Edward Shelton.

Visitation will be Friday, April 7, 2017 from 6-8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel, 3833 Chatham St., Bennett, N.C. 27208 and other times at the home.
