Mary Mohagen

Mary Evelyn Garner Mohagen, 84, surrounded by her loving family, peacefully passed away November 18, 2013 at Abernathy Laurels in Newton, NC.

A visitation will be held from 1-2 pm at Calvary Baptist Church in Carthage, Saturday, November 23, 2013. A funeral service will follow at 2 pm at the church with Rev.Dr. Bill Cooper officiating. Interment will be in the Church cemetery.

Mary was born May 17, 1929 to the late Riley Blake and Lillie Moore Garner of Moore County.

Mary lived a varied and exciting life. She retired from Bendix Corporation where she worked as an assembler. She was an avid bowler who earned numerous trophies. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed her flower gardens. Mary also enjoyed traveling in the summers with her sisters embarking on many adventures when visiting her daughter and her nephew, Kenneth. Mary was also an accomplished seamstress who donated her time mending and making repairs for individuals with developmental disabilities as well as sewing for family and friends. Most of all, she was a loving and caring person who opened her home and heart to many in need. Mary loved her family deeply and will be missed by them all.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Derotha ”Ishie” Garner Allred, Clara Garner Harrelson, Sallie Ann Garner Britt Hussey and brothers Henry Douglas Garner and Jessie Edward Garner.

She is survived by her husband of almost 59 years, Jerald George Middleton Mohagen of the home in Stanley; Daughter, Scarlett Chanter and husband Trey of Stanley; Son, Franklin H. Lackey and wife Sue of Stanley; Sisters, Josephine Forkner of Durham, and Velma York and husband Charlie of Seagrove and a brother, Daniel Lee Garner of Carthage; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl, Memphis, TN 38105. Mary and Jerry have been life-long supporters of St. Jude’s to honor their love of children.
