James Nelson Greenhut, aged 66, of Davenport, FL, passed away on February 28, 2026, at his home with his wife bedside and holding his hand. Born on September 18, 1959, Jim lived a life marked by love of family, kindness to others, a gentle spirit, and a good sense of humor. He touched countless people along the way.
A devoted partner, Jim met his wife Joanne (Jo) Calder, of Birmingham England, in 1995 and they married in 2001 in Redondo Beach CA. Jim found joy in his marriage, He and Jo enjoyed spending time together, whether at home or at the beach with their dogs. They shared much love and many years being there for each other. Family and friends were also important to Jim. He kept in touch with his cousins and friends from many years gone by. All of these people brought warmth and meaning to his life
Professionally, Jim spent 15 years working in the Motion Picture Industry, where he had an illustrious career that took him from New York City, NY to Los Angeles, CA. In the years following this, he received his Massage Therapy License and worked and taught in Massage Therapy Schools both in California and Florida. In his later years, he worked at home as a Day Trader.
Although diagnosed with blood cancer (MDS) in his later years, he continued his work at home until it became too difficult. He had a good medical team and valued the care he received from the staff at the cancer and blood transfusion centers. Jim worked hard, being his own advocate in his medical care; he fought the good fight.
Above all, Jim cherished his family. He was always close to his mother, and he and Jo looked after her in her final years. Jim never knew his father, as he passed away when Jim was an infant, but he cherished all of the stories and memories of his dad. He gained a father-in-law, George Calder, and enjoyed daily phone conversations with him and referred to him as his Dad.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Greenhut and their two dogs Clarkie and Lily, of Davenport, FL; his brother, Robert N. Greenhut of Los Angeles, CA and his wife Ellen Greenhut and their children Jennifer, Jeff, Caryn and Hakiem, his sister-in-law Maxine Calder of Liverpool England, and niece Rachael Calder and her son Memphis as well as many cousins who will forever carry his love and lessons forward. He is preceded in death by his parents, Johnny N. Greenhut and Mary Harris Greenhut, and his father-in-law George Calder.
A graveside ceremony will be held on April 18, 2026, at 11:00 am at Oakwood Cemetery in Siler City, NC. Friends and family are invited to gather, share memories, and honor a life that meant so much.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the MDS Foundation: 228 Park Ave S. PMB118983, New York, NY 10003-1502, or Bully Up Rescue: 105 London Fog Way Sanford, FL 32771, reflecting Jim’s enduring commitment to both advancing research in treatment of MDS and aiding the dog rescue organization that he supported.
Jimmy will be deeply missed, remembered always, and loved forever.
